4th Grade News

Updated: Oct 10, 2022

Hi All!

We are heading to the end of the first quarter and things are smooth sailing in 4th grade. In math, we will be starting our multiplication and division module. You might have some grumbling students in the coming weeks as we will be learning about multiplying multi-digit numbers and long division. It is always a tough unit to begin with, but they will be experts when it it is over!

We are finishing up our latest writing this week. We wrote a personal narrative about the story of where we got out names. Next week, we will be beginning a cross-curricular science and reading unit.

Here are a few other updates:

Field Trip! (Another one!)

On November 3rd we will be taking a trip to Maxwell Wildlife Rescue and then to Pilsen, KS to the Fr. Kapaun Memorial, Museum, and Church tour. We will leave the school at 8:15 a.m. and return approximately 2:45 p.m.

It most likely will be pretty cold in the morning when we are touring the wildlife rescue. Please have your students dress in layers as we will be in covered trams, but they are not heated. They do have some blankets, but it will be best to bring extra layers.

Cost: $7 -Please send with your student.

Mini Field Trip-Village Manor has asked us to come play BINGO again with the residents! We have not been able to do this for the past couple of years and we are delighted to participate in this service project. 4th grade will be going on November 4. We will need to leave at 12:45 p.m. and return at 1:45 p.m. We will only need a couple of drivers since we have a small class of 9. Please let me know if you can take us!

We WILL NOT have to bring snacks as we have in the past.

Drivers: If you are willing to drive and you do not have all the paperwork in order, please let me know ASAP. The process can take a week or more to complete. I can send home with paperwork, but you will need to get with Mrs. Whitehair in order to do the online portion.

AR

The last day that kids will be able to earn points at school will be next Friday, October 14th. You can log in and take tests online at home, but the last day to do that is October 16th. If students try cram reading in that weekend and then take a test on Monday, those points will count towards their 2nd nine weeks goal.

Conferences:

Conferences will be October 20th from 12-8. Sign ups should be coming the afternoon of October 10th.

Onward Labels:

Send your completed labels with your student by this Friday, October 7th. Thank you for your support!

Just a heads up:

For those who have not had me before, in November we begin our Angel Tree Project. We will discuss this more in depth during conferences, but I wanted to take a minute to give a quick run down.

The Angel Tree is a project where students continue to learn values such as, goal setting, working and working toward a goal, the value of a dollar, bargain shopping, cooperation, and most importantly, giving with a grateful heart.

Beginning November 1 students will begin to earn money for the Angel Tree by working for family and friends toward a goal that we have set as a class. This is not to take place of any chores that they are already responsible for or to make parents pay for chores that they wouldn't normally pay for, this is above and beyond. Students are to find a way to earn extra money that they donate towards our goal.

Students will have to fill out a time sheet with their job, hours and amount earned and turn the money into me.

All money will be due Monday, November 28. The Monday after Thanksgiving.

We will spend time budgeting, planning, and deciding on how many Angels we can help.

Tentatively, we will go to Walmart in Salina on December 2nd to shop, with a back up date of December 9 if we have severe weather. (These dates may change based on the Salvation Army)

We will then take our items to the Salvation Army in Salina, and take a tour of the facility.

This is my FAVORITE activity we do all year. I have heard from several former students that this is one of their fondest memories of 4th grade.

Have a great week!
